Game Recap
First Period
The Pats preached discipline coming into their road finale, but found themselves down a man in the early going. The PK came up with a big kill and, like in Kootenay, the Pats fed off that momentum and put forward a pretty strong road period. Hunter Shinkaruk looked dangerous in the opening frame as Teagan Sacher was forced to make a couple breakaway saves on the Tigers speedster en route to his first shutout period in the WHL.
Second Period
The Pats started out a little behind the eight-ball in the second period, but Lane Scheidl got things going. After Teagan Sacher made a huge save, Scheidl grabbed the puck and took it back don the ice, fired a wrist shot and beat Marek Langhamer on the far side. The Pats wouldn’t be able to hold the lead into the third, though as the dangerous Tiger powerplay would go to work. Kyle Becker would get the puck at the top of the zone and lean into a slap shot that beat Sacher high-glove side to even the game. The Pats entered the intermission tied at one, but more undisciplined penalties put the Blue and White down two men for a full two minutes for the second straight night with 1:56 of those penalties carrying into the third.
Third Period
It didn’t take long for the Tigers to cash in on their two man advantage. Forty-five seconds into the final period, Curtis Valk took a cross crease feed and deposited it behind a lunging Sacher, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The Pats were able to kill off the remainder of the penalties from the second period, but faced another shortly after and surrendered their third PP goal of the evening. The wheels came off from there as Valk and Shinkaruk picked apart the Pats defence and used nice breakaway moves to beat Sacher and charge the lead up to a 5-1 deficit for the Pats and that was how the game would finish.
The Pats took nine penalties in all on the night to maintain their title as the most penalized team in the league and have now surrendered eleven goals while down a man.
The Pats head home after tonight’s game and look to regroup before welcoming the Moose Jaw Warriors to the Brandt Centre Wednesday night.
