Regina, Saskatchewan – With the conclusion of the WHL Pre-Season, the Regina Pats have reassigned two players, defenceman Sean Whelan and forward Connor Gay, to their respective SJHL clubs.
Whelan (’94) appeared in all four Pats pre-season games without registering a points. A graduate of the Moose Jaw Generals Midget AAA program, Whelan dressed in 119 career games in the SMAAAHL. He totaled 26 points in his final season with the Generals in 2011-12.
Whelan joins the Estevan Bruins in the SJHL, coached by Keith Cassidy. The Bruins finished fourth in the SJHL’s South Division last season with a record of 28-28-0-2.
Gay (’95) suited up for the Pats in three exhibition games, scoring once in Regina’s first contest against Brandon. Last season, the Saskatoon native was the leading scorer for the SMAAAHL’s Saskatoon Blazers. He put up 63 points (32 G, 31 A) in 43 games in 2011-12.
Gay remains close to home as he’ll lineup with the Kindersley Klippers in the Junior-A ranks. The Klippers can use Gay’s scoring ability after finishing last in the SJHL standings in 2011-12 while only scoring 148 goals in 58 games.
