The Portland Winterhawks showed why they’re one of the top contenders in the Western Conference in the first period of tonight’s game. Luckily for the Pats, Matt Hewitt was on his game again and held Portland to one goal in the opening frame. Ty Rattie finished off a great passing play with Brendan Leipsic and Nic Petan for his second goal of the season. Despite the Pats being outshot 15-2 in the period, they didn’t leave empty handed. Adam Rossignol stole the puck at the Portland blue-line and pulled a quick back-hand to get the Pats tied at one after twenty.
The Pats made adjustments in the intermission and came out with a much stronger middle frame. Regina outshot Portland 12-11 and controlled the late stages with a couple of powerplays. Hewitt was forced to make a few more great saves as the 20-year old continued to keep the Pats in a position to take the game with the score still square at one heading into the break.
Fans in the Brandt Centre were treated to more goaltending heroics and some great back and forth action in the third. The Pats had great chances to take the lead on the powerplay with four opportunities including a five on three, but they couldn’t find a way to put a puck in the net. The Pats’ penalty kill outscored the PP on the evening as a defensive miscue by Portland gave Trent Ouellette the chance to break in and score to give the Pats a lead. The Hawks replied shortly after when Taylor Peters unleashed a blast from the point that beat Hewitt high to tie the score at two. The Winterhawks had two brilliant chances late, but Petan missed the net and Troy Rutkowski hit the post and the game headed to Overtime.
It looked like the man advantage may bite the Pats when the Hawks got one of their own in the extra frame. Hewitt held the door shut, though, and that set the stage for an awkward winner. Lane Scheidl came in off the wing and took a long shot that found its way behind Burke for the Pats 3-2 win.
1. Matt Hewitt – 34 Saves
2. Lane Scheidl – GWG
3. Ty Rattie – 1G
